Chapter Twenty-Five
The way Ellonyia had talked about cleaning up the room above the garage, Karl thought it would be a few daysâ work to clear it out. It was really only a few stacks of boxes, though.
The bed and dresser that were going into the room were stuck in a corner of the garage, so the boys carried them upstairs, then stacked all the boxes in the now empty corner. In less than an hour, the upstairs room had the bed and dresser, but nothing else.
Karl and Eric put the twin bed together. Just as they finished, Ellonyia came in with sheets, pillows, and a comforter.
She looked around the room. âItâs pretty plain in here. Weâve never used this room for anything except storage. We can paint it if you want.â
âBlack. All black walls,â Eric said.
Ellonyia shook her head. âHe always wants to paint things black. We never let him, but he always wants to. If youâve got any posters or anything you want to bring, feel free. This is your room now.â
Don Swanson walked in carrying a small television and set it on the dresser. âThereâs no cable outlet here, but weâve still got our old antenna on the roof, and we can hook you into that. Youâll be able to get the Portland channels at least.â
âHey!â Eric said. âI donât have a TV in my room!â
âRight. Start paying me fifty bucks a month and Iâll get an old black and white TV for your room too.â
âPass,â Eric said. âIâll just hang out in here with Karl.â
âThatâs what I figured,â Don said. He reached into his pocket and took out a small key ring with a single key on it. âThis is for the side door that goes into the garage. That way you can come and go as you please. Youâre an adult, and weâre going to treat you like one.â
âI swear to God, if I knew I could get all this stuff for fifty bucks a month, I would have gotten a job.â
âReally?â Don asked.
âWell...no, probably not,â Eric admitted.
âThatâs what I thought,â Don said. He tossed the key ring to Karl. âThe place is yours now. No need to check in with us, but if you need anything, let us know.â
Don and Ellonyia left, closing the door behind them.
Eric looked around and said, âYour room is a lot bigger than mine. I think we should have our D&D sessions in here. Thereâs a folding table and chairs in the garage. We can bring it up and set it up over there.â He pointed to an empty spot.
âSure, I donât care. That would be great.â
âOf course, youâll have a lot of freshmen in your room then.â
âI can handle it.â
âNow if only we knew someone that worked at Pizza! Pizza! Pizza! that could bring us something to eat on Friday.â
Karl got a free pizza every day he worked more than four hours, so he just said, âWhatever. I wonât let you guys starve.â He looked around the room, which had walls that sloped inward at the ceiling.
